Spring Update from Get Salted 🌊

The Salty Sip

Greetings friends, family, and strangers of the internet. I wanted to give everyone an update on some of the kinks the Get Salted team has been working out. First and foremost, a big THANK YOU to EVERYONE who has supported the process so far. The interest we’ve received is incredible and allows us to keep pushing for the highest quality product.

When the pre-order launched, the formula was essentially “good to go”—with the ratio of salt, magnesium, and potassium at levels we believed were ideal for both athletes and daily hydration. We sourced organic lemon juice powder, avoiding all “natural” and “artificial” flavors. A single “natural flavor” can be tied to over a hundred individual chemical substances. The flavoring industry uses 2,500+ flavor chemicals, many of which fall under the “natural flavors” umbrella. The FDA allows all of these to be grouped under one term: "natural flavor." So, consumers never see the full ingredient list. This is something we felt very strongly about avoiding—and we did.

Salt was another component we wanted to make sure we got right. Most electrolyte formulas have salt as the main ingredient—so why cheap out on the #1 component? While our baseline formula included “sea salt,” we soon realized that this is an incredibly misleading space. After going down the salt rabbit hole, we knew we had to pause production until we were confident in the quality of salt we’d be delivering to consumers.

In an enlightening (and at times frustrating) search, we were met with some challenges. Initially, we sought out artisanal sea salt providers and found several who could meet our quantity needs. (By artisanal, we mean local, family-run sea salt farms where salt is harvested directly from the ocean.) However, working with artisanal sea salt brought the challenge of getting these business owners on board with official chemical and purity testing. While we offered to pay, no one wanted to meet us halfway on this critical aspect.

Long story short: after spending a great deal of time connecting with and vetting sea salt providers, we ultimately had to pivot. Our goal was to source true ocean sea salt—not salt mined from a cave in Pakistan, or “sea salt” sourced from Utah. We’ve finally settled on a high-quality sea salt from Hawaii, but the journey to get here was not without its bumps!

I mention all of this to say: if you have an outstanding pre-order, as always, you’re welcome to cancel at any time for a full refund. It’s not about the money—the goal is simply to provide a fantastic hydration product with the highest quality ingredients. The pre-order was helpful in gauging interest in our ideas, and it did exactly that—people absolutely want a high-quality hydration product.

Looking ahead, we already have several additional formulas in the works with our R&D team, including:

  • A gut-friendly electrolyte product with probiotics

  • An unsweetened “raw” electrolyte variation

  • More to come!
